LIFT-O-MAT – Gas Spring with Hydraulic Compression and Extension Damping
Wherever a folding or turning motion needs to be held safely in the end position, the LIFT-O-MAT gas spring with hydraulic motion damping is the right choice.

It will prevent unbraked force application to hinges or joints, saving the material from wear and tear. The entire motion sequence will become more harmonic and controlled overall.



The hydraulically dampened LIFT-O-MAT has an extra oil chamber. As soon as the piston leaves the gas range and enters the oil, its speed will be reduced. The degree of damping is determined by the use of patented Labyrinth pistons, as well as by the viscosity of the oil. The oil amount used will define the damping range.

To dampen extension, the gas spring is installed vertically with the piston rod down. In situations where additional compression damping is needed, there are standard models that can be installed vertically with the piston rod pointing up.

In cool weather it may not stay open safely despite high force application, while very high temperatures make closing it more difficult; the lid will then barely close.



In a strut, the Stabilus gas spring is combined with a mechanical spring, which can be located on the inside or outside. This combines the advantages of the gas spring (speed control, end position damping) with those of the mechanical spring (little temperature dependency). 

The effect of temperature on the extension force is reduced considerably, since the load is distributed between the gas spring and the mechanical coil spring.

This allows reducing the closing forces at high temperatures without increasing the opening force in cold temperatures (-30 °C).

LIFT-O-MAT TCV (Temperature Compensation Valve)

The Temperature-Compensated Gas Spring

The force required to operate a lid is also affected by the ambient temperature. In cool weather it may not stay open safely despite high force application, while very high temperatures make closing it more difficult; the lid will then barely close.

To minimize the influence of heat and cold on the functional properties of a lid, there is LIFT-O-MAT TCV from STABILUS. This gas spring supports closing at high temperatures. At the same time, it will hold the open tailgate safely in position at temperatures below 0˚C.



The LIFT-O-MAT TCV is a gas pressure spring that can compensate even for extreme temperature fluctuations. It has an additional gas-filled temperature compensation chamber that is separated by a valve. At temperatures above 0˚C, this valve will close automatically, closing off the additional gas chamber. This will result in the force of the gas spring dropping, and the lid can be closed more easily.

HYDRO-LIFT T (Temperature)

The Temperature-Compensated Gas Spring

The force required to operate a lid is also affected by the ambient temperature. In cool weather it may not stay open safely despite high force application, while very high temperatures make closing it more difficult; the lid will then barely close.

The HYDRO-LIFT T from Stabilus significantly reduces the temperature influence on the lid function. The additional piston valve ensures that the application will stay open safely and close easily in extremely low temperatures.



The function of the HYDRO-LIFT T is similar to that of the standard HYDRO-LIFT; in addition, the piston valve is equipped with a bimetallic element. If the temperature falls below a limit of +10˚C, the valve closes and the hold function is activated automatically.

This allows designing the extension force much lower; the safe holding force at low temperatures down to -30˚C remains the same.

The overall lower force level spells relief for the articulation joints of the application. This will make the closing operation at higher temperatures much more comfortable.

LIFT-O-MAT Gas Spring with End Position Lock
The larger the lid, the more unpleasant the consequences if it should start moving on its own and fall shut.

In addition to force assist, the LIFT-O-MAT gas spring with end position lock also provides a safe mechanical lock of the application in the open position.



Two versions are available for end position lock in the extended position.

The gas spring with the lock on the outside features a support tube at the end of the piston rod that folds out automatically when the gas spring is fully extended. During closing, the support tube must be folded down by hand.

The locking of a gas spring with the lock on the inside is comparable to the mechanics of a ball point pen: when the gas spring is pushed in lightly, it will catch. If pushed briefly in the extension direction, the locking mechanism will be released.

LIFT-O-MAT Gas Spring with Telescope Tube

For Extra Opening Angle

During repair work, it is an advantage if the hood can be opened wider than usual. To achieve a larger opening angle, the pressure tube of this LIFT-O-MAT version is equipped with an additional plastic tube that can be extended like a telescope.



Stabilus offers the LIFT-O-MAT with telescope tube in versions with and without pressure tube lock. In engine hoods, the end position lock provides extra safety because it will hold the hood safely in position during work performed. However, no lock will be necessary if only a larger return stroke is required. If the telescope tube is unlocked, the flap can be opened by hand until the mechanism catches in the end position, where it will hold the lid safely open. For closing, the telescope tube must be unlocked again, after passing the return stroke, the hood can be closed safely and dampened.

LIFT-O-MAT – Gas Spring with Dynamic Compression/Extension Damping

The standard LIFT-O-MAT from Stabilus is available in two versions:

With dynamic extension damping, this gas spring can open doors and lids in any mounting orientation up to a specified position, where it will gently stop the motion. This reduces wear and tear on the joints and hinges and prevents collisions with the garage ceiling or wall.

With dynamic compression damping, the LIFT-O-MAT is suited primarily for engine hoods where the hood is to be dampened gently when it is closed, reducing wear on the material.



With a special longitudinal groove inside the pressure tube, the damping properties can be optimized to the application. Differing compression and extension characteristics can be realized, as well as dampened approaches to intermediate positions.
By increasing or reducing the groove cross section, the speed of motion over the entire stroke can be adjusted as desired. The motion can be slowed down until it almost comes to a stop.

Dynamically Dampened Gas Spring with or without Stop Range

In garages with low ceilings, a large tailgate can quickly become a problem if it slams against the ceiling without braking. Auto repair shops appreciate the hood staying in the service position, which makes working on the engine much more convenient.

INTER-STOP from Stabilus allows limiting the opening angles of lids and doors and will safely hold the load in the desired position.



The INTER-STOP gas spring combines the properties of a spring’s dynamic damping with a stop function provided by a valve integrated into the piston. This allows dividing the opening angle of the hood or lid into two or more function ranges.

In the first section of the stroke, the INTER-STOP without stop range will function like a LIFT-O-MAT gas spring with dynamic damping. The hood will stop gently at a specified hold point. As soon as the hood is pushed past the hold point, it will open automatically to its end position. In the INTER-STOP with stop range, the gas spring will behave as described above in the first part of the stroke. After that, the hood can be positioned manually at any opening angle until the end stop has been reached.

The compression of the gas spring works the same as in the standard version of the LIFT-O-MAT.

For Variable Positioning Without a Locking Mechanism

The HYDRO-LIFT gas spring is a LIFT-O-MAT with additional holding function, with comfortable rigid or elastic locking.

Even weight fluctuations between defined limits, for example due to varying loads, are no problem. The HYDRO-LIFT does not require an additional stop mechanism. Once opened, the lid will remain safely in place.



In the HYDRO-LIFT from Stabilus, a valve integrated into the piston of the gas spring ensures a safe hold. Depending on the design, the variable stop function can be active across the entire adjustment range, or in one or more partial ranges of the stroke.

Unlike the gas-filled version with elastic locking, the oil-filled HYDRO-LIFT features limited, rigid locking in the compression direction. This eliminates the light spring deflection.

Light-Weight Gas Spring with Aluminum Pressure Tube

Light-weight construction is one of the big topics among automotive manufacturers, since it is key to drastically lowering fuel consumption. Consequently, it is a logical step for Stabilus to add light-weight gas springs to its product line.

Depending on their dimensions, the use of aluminum pressure tubes can save up to 30% in weight compared to conventional gas springs with steel pressure tubes. Their polished, shiny metal surface and attractive design give these gas pressure springs the look of a true high-tech product.



Regarding force assist and damping, the aluminum gas spring has the same properties as the standard version of the LIFT-O-MAT.

In addition to the lifting force, the ELEKTRO-LIFT gas spring from Stabilus also transfers current to the hood – without annoying cables.

Consequently, its main area of application is the trunk lid or hood, where it can act as a switch for the trunk lighting or as a current conductor for heated windshields or windshield wipers.



Equipped with a sliding contact at the piston, plastic fittings, and an insulating protective shrink-tube, the ELEKTRO-LIFT can conduct an electric current up to 25 A max. at 12 V.

Flat connectors provided at the piston rod and pressure tube ends act as electrical connections. Bare or interfering cable connections in the motor vehicle will be a thing of the past.

Stabilus distinguishes between three variants:

  • The ELEKTRO-LIFT gas spring with permanent current connection as a simple ground conductor with metal connectors.
  • The ELEKTRO-LIFT gas spring with current conductor, equipped with plastic fittings and pluggable electric connections for carrying current.
  • The ELEKTRO-LIFT gas spring with a stroke-controlled switch (e.g., in the end position), as sliding contact, Hall or Reed element.

End Fittings
Stabilus offers a variety of end fittings for gas spring installation.


Our standard end fittings:

Angle joint made of metal with or without ball pivots

This angle joint is a high-quality and sturdy variant in our line of end fittings. Due to its high strength, it is especially suited for applications where high forces occur, providing the necessary convenience. What is special about the angle joint is its ease of installation, and that it can also compensate for angle offset. That means, in applications where the gas spring is installed slightly out of plumb, the angle joint will offset the resulting angle.

The plastic angle joint is an inexpensive variant of the angle joint.  Also very easy to install and, like the metal joint, it will compensate for angle offset. The plastic variant is especially suited for applications in which light loads will be moved.

Metal eyes

Our metal eyes are also used as end fittings. Due to their high strength and in the various lengths, thicknesses and diameters available, they are extremely flexible.

Stainless steel eye

Stainless steel eyes have the same functionality as eyes made from metal. The high-quality properties of stainless steel provide additional corrosion protection when exposed to acid and lye or in critical environments, such as sea or industrial air.

Fork head made of metal

Should extremely high forces or weights occur in an application, the fork head will be the safest variant. Due to its high-strength connection, which is additionally supported by a metal pin, it can safely move high loads.

Ball joint

With this special ball joint, Stabilus is making  the installation of gas springs in cars easier. Only a punched-out hole is required for assembly; weld-on ball pivots or angled plates will no longer be necessary.
